The Weekly Rider - Bec Tsiamas

Bec Tsiamas is the Weekly Rider! She discovered riding 18 months ago and now lives and breathes the sport... working at Bicycle Express in Adelaide, and when not working, she's either hanging out with friends, hitting up local vegan eateries, or out riding her bike!

Dream Bike

I'd design my own Trek Emonda SLR 9 with Project One. I already ride an Emonda and I love it so much, so I think it would be cool to create my own. I'm not entirely sure what colours I'd go for yet but I definitely want Sram Red eTap on it! A bike that is lightweight is my priority since I'm always riding in the hills.

What is your favourite local ride

I really enjoy riding up to Mt Lofty and all the different ways you can get up there - from cruising up Norton Summit, riding up Greenhill road, or even taking the longer route up Belair road & Sheoak road; I love what the Adelaide Hills has to offer. The view from Mt Lofty is breathtaking, and I always feel like I have achieved something when I reach the top.

What is your current cycling goal

My current cycling goal is to get stronger and go faster on the roadie. Another goal I have is to gain some confidence on my mountain bike - I crashed on my second ever ride, fracturing my scaphoid, so I'm a little bit apprehensive when it comes to the trails.

When I am on the bike I....

I am usually either staring at the beautiful scenery around me or thinking about eating fruit haha. I know it's random but whenever I'm working really hard riding uphill, I always start to crave a fruit smoothie or some nice juicy watermelon and mango.

How did your love of bikes come about?

I knew a few people that rode bikes and one day me and my friend walked into a bike shop and I thought "Why not give it a go?" So I bought the first bike I saw. I started riding in the hills and I was immediately hooked. The fresh air, the adrenaline, the freedom - it was amazing. That was only about a year and a half ago, so I still have a lot to learn and experience.

I fell in love with the sport so quickly that only three months after discovering cycling, I got a job at my favourite bike shop - Bicycle Express, and I have been working there for over a year now. The majority of my friends are all cyclists too, so I'm constantly surrounded by bikes!

Share a cycling memory

It's hard to pick just one but my first 100km ride was the most memorable because it showed me that I could do anything. I felt so alive and fit, and just amazed at what my own body can do. My friend Shannon rode with me the whole time, despite how slow I was going, and we had a lot of fun that day. It was a really great accomplishment for me.

I love to ride because....

I love to ride because it makes me feel alive. The fresh air, the peacefulness, the freedom...riding simply makes me happy.
