Specialized S-WORKS 2014 Road Shoe
A good road shoe lets you transfer maximum energy into the drivetrain and keeps your feet feeling fresh. The Specialized S-works road is a no compromise pro level shoe.
Specialized are one of the biggest names in cycling. La Velocita has been lucky enough to test a shoe that many riders in the pro peloton are wearing, the S-works Road.
About - The S-Works Road was redesigned for 2013 to make what was already a top performer even better. The shoe we had on test weighed in at under 500 grams for the pair (size 45) and has a 3 bolt cleat pattern.
Quality - These shoes have been with La Velocita from the end of the Australian summer and have been through extreme heat, rain and dirty road spray. After a ride, a wipe with a damp cloth brings them up like new. The shoes are supplied with a tool to adjust the mechanism but we have not had to touch it.
Adjustment - The S-Works Road is supplied with an option of footbeds and shims that can be matched to your foot type. Get this right and the shoe feels like a second skin. The shoes can be tightened or backed off on the fly with ease thanks to their double Boa dials.
Ride - Super stiff and lightweight you feel fully connected to the bike and don't feel any flex in the sole. We found the fit of the shoe accommodated wider feet, there was no build up of pressure points and airflow was good keeping our feet comfortable in hot weather but were equally not too cold in the autumn and winter mornings when paired with some marino socks and shoe covers.
Sizes - Euro 38 to 48 in white/black or matt black. A narrow fit shoe is expected to be released in mid to late 2014.
Price - At around $400 these are clearly top end shoes. You do get what you pay for in this shoe though.
Overall - Light, super stiff, good quality, a shoe that is warn in the pro peloton. We'd love to keep a pair here at La Velocita.
